In April 2021, I left Brussels to live in London. I hardly said anything to anyone around me. I had been talking about it for quite some time but I had never proved that what I was saying was a reality and not just a dream. Well, at first it was a dream. But I decided to make it my reality.
I was raised in a pretty strict education in terms of studies and life: you go to school, you get a 9 to 5, then you buy a house and have kids. So it was quite complicated to tell myself that I could get past all that, just because I’m not like that. When I used to think that being myself made me a person who disperses too easily, who dreams too much and is too distracted, I now think it’s a character trait, I’m one of those people who have to make a living from their passion and who can’t stay put. I don’t want to work all my life for someone, to fulfil someone’s dream. I want to work for my own dream, to be my own boss. And that’s not a flaw. It’s a character trait. It’s been about a year since I started a huge introspection and little by little I’m moving towards what I want in life. Even if it doesn’t correspond to the classical standards.
Anyway, my boyfriend and I decided to leave. That it was time to start living. We weren’t sure where to go; New York? Los Angeles? London? Where to start? Being Belgians and for personal reasons, the easiest place to start was London. We don’t know yet how long we’ll stay there before leaving for other horizons. And we don’t know where we’re going to settle down for good. And it feels good to be free. My biggest regret is that I didn’t do all this earlier in my life. We just know that we want a place to stay near our families for when we come back regularly. The rest is yet to be written.
How did we do to live un London? Well, you already know that since Brexit you need a visa to live and work in UK. If you already lived or came before January 2021, you could apply to the Pre-settled statuts ou Settled status for the people who lived longer in UK.
If it’s not your case, well, it will be a lot more complicated. But not impossible! There are some criteria you’ll need to pass like: having a college diploma, being sponsored by an employer, having a salary of a certain amount, speaking English, or others things like that. You will need a number of points. I’ll put the link to the government website at the end of the article if you are interested in the procedures.
I our case, we went to London juste before December 2020. So, we applied for the pre-settled status and we have it now. We can stay here for 5 years and then we will be able to apply for the Settled statuts if we respected the conditions. But, if we didn’t have the PSS, my boyfriend found a job here before we arrived so we would be able to apply to the visa. It would have been a lot more complicated but possible.
In terms of jobs, there is a lot jobs available but it’s a bit difficult to found something when you’re in another country and not a lot of companies sponsors. So yeah, it can be difficult for now. But, never, never lose hope. You can do it. I hope this will help you.
